Stephen J. Silverberg Named By Super Lawyers Magazine as Top New York Metro Area Super Lawyer for 2017 in Elder Law

Congratulations to my colleagues who share with me the prestige of being named to the New York Metro Super Lawyers list for 2017 in Elder Law. I have been on this list since 2007, and I take a great deal of pride in this recognition.

Each year, Super Lawyers, a Thomson Reuters publication, identifies no more than five percent of the lawyers in New York State as “Super Lawyers” – outstanding lawyers with attained high peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process includes independent research and peer evaluations.

I am also proud to be a member of another select group – Certified Elder Law Attorney, known as CELA®.

I am one of only 500 CELAs® in the country. This designation is awarded by the National Elder Law Foundation (NELF under the auspices of the American Bar Association. The certification program identifies those lawyers who “…have the enhanced knowledge, skills, experience, and proficiency to be properly identified to the public as certified Elder Law attorneys.” This designation requires meeting rigorous qualification standards including a full day written examination, continuing legal education requirements exceeding those required by state law and background checks and personal recommendations.

While New York requires no attorney to have this designation to practice law, going through the process is an indication of an attorney’s commitment.

When choosing an attorney to help your family navigate the estate planning, long-term care, Medicaid, and related issues, you want to select a professional with experience and focus in these areas of the law.

Frankly, an attorney who “dabbles” in Elder Law or estate planning will not have the same knowledge as one who has devoted his career to attaining a higher level of skills.
